Building Outdoor Living Spaces for Southern Utah's Climate
D.A.D.S. Construction serves homeowners across Washington County from our base in St. George, UT. We are veteran owned and operated with 30+ years of construction experience, and we build decks, shade structures, enclosures, additions and remodels that are planned around the real conditions of the area: extreme summer heat, strong UV, wind, red dust and short, intense monsoon storms.
St. George sits at roughly 2,880 feet. Summer highs regularly reach 105–115°F, while January highs are around 55°F. That combination makes outdoor living possible almost all year, as long as the space has the right shade, airflow and materials. Every community we serve has its own details, so we treat each project individually.
St. George, UT
In St. George, the biggest challenge is afternoon sun. West-facing backyards can become unusable in summer without shade, which is why louvered roofs, patio covers and privacy screens are popular here. Many neighborhoods, such as Sunriver, have HOA design review, so we plan colors and materials that fit community guidelines.
Washington City, UT
Homes in Washington City often sit on sandy or compacted soils, which affects footings for decks and freestanding structures. Louvered roofs and similar shade structures may be treated as accessory structures with setback requirements, so we account for placement early in the design.
Hurricane, UT
In Hurricane, strong spring winds are a real design factor. We plan anchoring and choose structures and railings that stand up to gusts, and we often recommend screen porches or enclosures for homeowners who want protection from blowing dust.
Leeds, UT
Leeds sits at a higher elevation than St. George, with canyon-adjacent, sloped lots and red sandstone and clay soils. Elevated decks are a natural fit for these lots, creating level outdoor space that takes advantage of the views.
Santa Clara, UT
Santa Clara has a mix of valley-floor and hillside lots with red rock views. Homeowners here often want shade without blocking the scenery, so adjustable pergolas and sunrooms with large glass areas are common choices.
Ivins, UT
Ivins sits at the base of Snow Canyon State Park, and outdoor living here is all about the landscape. Decks, awning pergolas and covered patios let you enjoy the views while staying out of the direct sun.

Local Factors We Plan For on Every Project
- Heat and UV: materials and finishes are selected for intense sun and high summer temperatures.

- Wind and red dust: secure anchoring, and screen or glass enclosures where dust is a concern.
- HOA review: we help prepare the details your HOA needs for approval.
- Codes and permits: work is licensed, insured and built to Washington County and local city codes.
- Soil and slope: footings and layouts are designed for sandy, clay or hillside conditions.
Common Questions About Our Service Area
Do you charge more for projects outside St. George?
Every estimate is based on the specific project, its size, materials and site access. We give you a clear, honest price up front during your free estimate, whether your home is in St. George or one of the surrounding towns, so you know what to expect before work begins.
Do you handle HOA approvals and permits in every city?
Requirements vary between cities and neighborhoods in Washington County. We help you prepare the drawings and material details your HOA asks for, and we build to the applicable county and city codes. We will tell you during planning which approvals your project is likely to need.
What is the best first project for a hot backyard?
For most homes, shade comes first. A patio cover, louvered roof or adjustable pergola can make an unusable slab comfortable for much of the year. If your lot is sloped or has no level area, a deck is usually the starting point, with shade added on top.
How far in advance should I call?
Call as early as you can, especially if your HOA needs to review the design. Timelines depend on project scope, material availability and approvals, and we share a realistic schedule with you once the plan is set.

How Do Conditions Change Across the Wider Service Area?
Conditions change quickly as you leave the St. George valley. Towns along the Virgin River share the same desert heat, while communities to the north and in Iron County sit noticeably higher, with colder winters, occasional snow and more freeze-thaw cycles. We adjust footings, materials and roof design to the elevation and exposure of each home.
What should homeowners in La Verkin, Toquerville and Virgin plan for?
These towns sit near Hurricane and share many of the same conditions: hot summers, strong spring winds and lots that range from flat valley parcels to rocky hillside sites. Secure anchoring for covers and pergolas is a priority, and shade over west-facing patios makes the biggest difference in summer comfort.
What about Rockville, Springdale and Apple Valley?
Homes along the road toward Zion are surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, so outdoor spaces are usually designed to frame the view rather than block it. Lots can be narrow or uneven, and wind funnels through the canyons. Open-sided structures, glass enclosures and low-profile railings tend to suit these settings well.
How is building different in Veyo, Dammeron Valley, Central, Pine Valley and Enterprise?
These communities sit at higher elevations than St. George. Winters are colder, and the higher you go, the more snow a roof or cover may need to carry. We size framing and choose covered structures with that in mind, and we plan decks and stairs so they shed water and ice instead of trapping it.
What about Cedar City, Enoch and New Harmony?
Iron County homes deal with real winters as well as hot summer afternoons. A sunroom or enclosed porch can extend the usable season on both ends of the year, and decks need materials that tolerate repeated freezing and thawing. Some subdivisions also have their own design rules, so we check requirements early.
How Does Scheduling Work Across Washington County?
Scheduling starts with a free estimate at your home, wherever you are in our service area. We group site visits by area when we can, share a clear scope and timeline once the design is set, and keep you updated directly if weather, materials or approvals affect the schedule. You always know what comes next.
- Call or send your project details: reach us at (435) 301-8298 or through our contact form with your town and the type of project.
- Site visit: we come out, measure, check sun, slope and soil, and talk through options.
- Design and approvals: we finalize the plan and help prepare what your HOA and the city or county need.
- Build window: once approvals are in place, we confirm your build dates and keep you informed throughout.
- Final walkthrough: we review the finished work together before we call it complete.
Does my town affect how long approvals take?
It can. Each city in Washington County has its own building department, and many neighborhoods add HOA design review on top. Projects with no HOA and a simple scope usually move faster than those needing several sign-offs. Starting early is the best way to keep a project on track.
What should I have ready before the visit?
- A rough idea of how you want to use the space and how many people it should hold.
- Photos or links to styles you like, such as projects in our gallery of past work.
- Your HOA design guidelines, if your neighborhood has them.
- Any known property line, easement or utility locations.
