Deck Building & Outdoor Living in St. George, UT
D.A.D.S. Construction is a veteran-owned deck builder and outdoor living contractor in St. George, Utah. We design and build custom decks, pergolas, louvered roofs, patio covers, sunrooms and enclosures, plus kitchen, bathroom and whole-home remodels, for homeowners throughout Washington County. With more than 30 years of construction experience, our small team plans every project around the way you actually want to use your yard.
Why does the desert climate matter for a deck or patio?
St. George summers regularly reach 105–115°F, UV exposure is extreme, and west-facing lots take the worst of the afternoon sun. A deck or cover that would last decades elsewhere can fade, warp or overheat here if the materials and orientation are wrong. Southern Utah also brings red dust and wind storms in spring and short, heavy monsoon bursts in late summer, so drainage, fastening and wind resistance matter as much as looks.
The good news is that winters are mild, with January highs around 55°F, so a well-planned outdoor space can be used almost year-round. Shade, airflow and heat-tolerant surfaces are what turn a hot backyard into a place you want to spend time.
What is the three-layer approach to outdoor living?
We think about every backyard project in three layers. Planning them together avoids costly changes later and makes sure each piece works with the others.
- Platform: the deck, patio or raised surface you stand on, built on solid framing with safe stairs and railings.
- Overhead: a pergola, louvered roof, awning or patio cover that controls sun, heat and rain.
- Perimeter: railings, decorative privacy screens, screens or glass enclosures that define the space and block wind, dust and views.
How does a project with D.A.D.S. Construction work?
Our process is built on clear plans and direct communication. You deal with the same small team from the first conversation to the final walkthrough.
- Free consultation and estimate: we visit your home, listen to your ideas, check sun exposure, slope and access, and talk through options and budget.
- Design and permits: we finalize the design, share the scope and timeline up front, and help with Washington County permits and HOA design review where required.
- Build: as a licensed and insured contractor, we build to code and keep you updated directly at each stage.
- Final walkthrough: we review the finished project with you and make sure every detail meets your expectations.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions St. George homeowners ask most about decks, pergolas, louvered roofs and patio covers. Don't see your question? Call us at (435) 301-8298.
What decking materials hold up best in St. George's desert heat?
Summer highs in St. George regularly reach 105–115°F with intense UV, so material choice matters. Composite and capped decking resist fading, splitting and splinters better than untreated wood, and lighter colors stay cooler underfoot. During your free estimate we compare options for your sun exposure, budget and maintenance preferences.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a deck or patio cover?
Many decks, pergolas and patio covers in Washington County require a building permit, and many St. George neighborhoods have HOA design review. Requirements vary by city, structure height and whether it attaches to the house. We help you understand what applies to your project and build to local code so approvals go smoothly.
How long does a deck or pergola project take?
Timelines depend on size, design complexity, materials, permit and HOA review times, and product lead times for items like louvered roof systems. Once we have visited your property and agreed on a design, we share a clear schedule up front and keep you updated directly at every stage until the final walkthrough.
What is the difference between a louvered roof and a fixed patio cover?
A fixed patio cover provides permanent shade and rain protection with a solid or slatted roof. A louvered roof uses adjustable aluminum blades you can open for sun and airflow or close for shade and monsoon showers. Louvered systems cost more but give you flexible comfort through every St. George season.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Every project starts with a free estimate. We visit your home, listen to your ideas, look at sun exposure, slope and access, and explain your options in plain language. Call (435) 301-8298 or send a request through our contact form to schedule a time that works for you.
